Preserving these assets and employing them to the betterment of people is what guides us. We are advocates for change, and committed to playing a dynamic role in the search for ways to promote art, environmental, and humanitarian ideals.
Art Education
Art education is the essence of our mission to promote creative, environmental, and humanitarian ideals that inspire and transform participants. We accomplish this through classes and workshops, tours, retreats, performances, and monthly life-drawing sessions for our art community. We also offer internships and apprenticeships that entice students out of their usual school programs and classrooms and into our studios for a life-changing experience.
James T. Hubbell Archive
The Ilan Lael Archive is a vital resource that catalogs and preserves the artworks, objects, records, and historical items of James Hubbell. His vast body of art and architectural works has an estimated 17,000 pieces of art, 100+ journals, 3000+ photographs, and countless paper and electronic records and files. In addition to loaning works to museum exhibitions, the Archive supports Hubbell art owners and collectors, and the educational mission of Ilan Lael Foundation. We preserve and digitize these works to make them accessible to collectors, scholars, curators, and to help educate future generations about the life and work of James and Anne Hubbell. Much work remains to be done, and your support is vital to our efforts.
Lectures, Talks, and Saturday Socials
Guest speakers, curators, scholars, and professionals speak here on a wide variety of topics, sharing their perspectives on art, culture, current events, and the many activities of Ilan-Lael, such as our Pacific Rim Park project. By collaborating with individuals and cultural institutions far beyond our property we hope to inspire a rich conversation about the importance of art and creativity throughout the region and beyond. As cultural center, we recognize the importance of being a gathering place that celebrates diversity, creativity, peace, and new friendships.
Restoration & Preservation
Caring for Ilan-Lael’s buildings, which include the home, studios, and galleries of artist James Hubbell, is an important part of our mission. Most of these historically designated buildings were built by James and Anne Hubbell, their four sons, and teams of other artists, between 40 and 60 years ago. Constructed mostly of adobe bricks, cedar wood, gunite (a form of concrete), and fieldstone, they need regular care. All fixes and improvements are a process of art restoration and historic preservation and must be brought to life by uniquely skilled artisans and volunteers. Please support our efforts and help us keep these amazing buildings standing strong for many decades to come.
