For Beginner and Intermediate Levels
Are you curious to learn the various techniques of tiling? From common bath & kitchen tile to fine decorative mosaic design, we’re offering classes for beginner and intermediate levels with our artist-in-residence tile artist Emilie Ledieu.
Three one-day workshops at Ilan-Lael in Julian, CA will give you basic instruction in technique and design theory. You will work on a Hubbell-designed building measuring, cutting, and installing common construction tile in creative ways. Class size limited to 4 and Covid measures are required: mask and social distancing. Must be 16 years of age or older to enroll.
Saturday April 17, 2021 Basic Tile Design
This day-long workshop will introduce participants to working with traditional (subway) tile materials using creative, DIY techniques. Participants will be shown the basics of masonry tools and materials throughout the day, as well as the steps of tackling a tile project that includes both creatively and traditionally laid tiles. Participants will be helping to lay standard subway tile in a Hubbell structure. This workshop is perfect for the masonry novice. A tour of the ILF/Hubbells Studios kicks off the day!
Saturday May 1, 2021 Broken Tile Workshop
The techniques of broken tile (or Picasiette-style) mosaics will be taught during this day-long workshop. Basic masonry tools and ceramic mosaic materials will be introduced as well as the general knowledge needed to tackle one’s own project. Participants will be helping to install broken tile mosaics on a Hubbell structure while learning hands on how to blend broken and whole tile. There will be a tour of the property given keeping a close eye on Hubbell’s masterful blend of traditional and creative tile.
**this workshop will mostly be focusing on the lower part of the building’s tile and will therefore involve time on one’s knees.
Saturday May 15, 2021 Glass Mosaic Tile Design (1 of 3)
This workshop is best suited for those who attended either of the first two Glass Mosaic Tile Design workshops or are trying to sharpen their mosaic masonry skills. participants will start the day by readying the glass mosaic created in the first two workshops for installation. A midday break to tour the grounds and take in the inspiration gained on Hubbell Hill will be followed with an afternoon of getting to understand the final stages of the mosaic process, all while being a part of a permanent installation on the Ilan Lael/Hubbell Studio grounds!
