For Beginner and Intermediate Levels
Are you curious to learn the various techniques of tiling? From common bath & kitchen tile to fine decorative mosaic design, we’re offering classes for beginner and intermediate levels with our artist-in-residence tile artist Emilie Ledieu.
Three one-day workshops at Ilan-Lael in Julian, CA will give you basic instruction in technique and design theory. You will work on a Hubbell-designed building measuring, cutting, and installing common construction tile in creative ways. Class size limited to 4 and Covid measures are required: mask and social distancing. Must be 16 years of age or older to enroll.
Saturday September 25: Mosaic Mirror Creation
In this day-long intensive workshop, participants will get to create a decorative mosaic mirror using a selection of glass, ceramic, and natural materials. Many basic mosaic skills and tools will be introduced as you create your own custom piece to take home!! In the afternoon, you will be taken on a tour of the property before we grout up your new mirrors! We will provide protective gear, but comfortable work clothing and footwear are encouraged. Bring your owned bag lunch.
Saturday October 9 & Saturday October 23: Outdoor Mosaic Creation Parts 1 and 2
Participants who sign up for this two-part workshop will gain the basic understanding of how to create and install outdoor mosiac work. They will be given the rare opportunity to execute a James Hubbell design while making a mosaic that will permanently stay on Hubbell Hill. An introduction to mosaic materials, tools, and tips as well as elementary masonry skills will be covered during these two intensive workshops. Students must sign up for both workshops. Protective gear and aprons will be included, however work clothing and shoes are encouraged. Bring your own bag lunch.
Saturday November 13th and Saturday November 20th: Vitreous Intensive Parts 1 and 2
This two-part intermediate mosaic workshop will focus exclusively on the art of vitreous glass tile. For those who love Jim Hubbell’s use of the 3/4 inch glass tiles, this intensive class taught over two Saturdays will introduce some of the almost endless ways one can work with these colorful glass tiles! Students will get to design and create a small piece of their own art while practicing the many fun ways to play and create vitreous mosaic work. Participants are expected to attend both workshops. Protective gear will be provided, but comfortable work clothing and shoes are encouraged. Bring your own bag lunch.
Saturday December 5th: Mosaic Frame Creation
Being held so close to Christmas, this day-long workshop will provide opportunity to make a gift for a loved one, or maybe just to treat yourself to fun day of mosaic creation! Basic mosaic tools and skills will be introduced while you design and create a unigue mosaic picture frame to take home with you. We’ll mostly use glass and natural materials to make these beautiful frames. While our glue dries, we’ll go on a full tour of the Hubbell and Ilan-Lael property! Protective gear is provided, but comfortable work clothes and shoes are encouraged. Bring your own bag lunch.
