Included in our traditional Saturday afternoon tour, guests are invited to stick around afterwards, mingle with friends and enjoy a selection of delicious local wines. Each Saturday Social one of our favorite creative experts will be joining the group to give a special presentation. Topics will range from art and architecture to nature and conservation practices, health and wellness and more! Guests will have the chance to connect and discuss these topics in more depth while exploring Ilan-Lael’s beautiful grounds and enjoying selections from our favorite local wineries.
May 3 | Keith York of Modern San Diego
James Hubbell’s relationship to architect Sim Bruce Richards
Join Keith York, creator of Modern San Diego, and biographer of Sim Bruce Richards, as he explores the remarkable four-decade friendship and collaborations between Richards and James Hubbell. Learn about the innovative ways they integrated lighting, windows, railings, and sculpture into Richards’ residential designs. A book signing with Keith York will conclude the lecture.

May 10 | Danielle Susalla-Deery of Oceanside Museum of Art
Presenting on the Museum’s long time support of James Hubbell during some of his most pivotal career moments
Danielle Deery is an independent curator and former Director of Exhibitions at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA). She has curated 32 exhibitions at OMA including James Hubbell: In Search of Shadows (2013). Her current exhibition, which features Hubbell work, Stories that Connect Us: Selections from the OMA Collection is on display now through August 31st. May 17 | Architect Drew Hubbell, AIA of Hubbell and Hubbell Architects
Geen building, architecture and growing up at Ilan-Lael
Drew Hubbell leads the firm Hubbell & Hubbell Architects, and collaborated with his father—James Hubbell—merging art and architecture in ecologically and aesthetically mindful ways. His firm specializes in sustainable architecture, green building materials and the use of alternative building materials such as straw bales, insulated concrete forms, adobe, and sprayed concrete construction.

May 31 | Eric Jones of Volcan Mountain Foundation
The importance of land conservation and stewardship
Eric Jones, President and Executive Director of the Volcan Mountain Foundation (which Anne Hubbell was a founding member of) works to preserve the unique ecological diversity of the Volcan Mountain range, a landscape that deeply resonated with artist James Hubbell. Nature, in its raw and untamed beauty, was a profound inspiration for Hubbell, frequently becoming the subject of his vibrant watercolors.

June 7 | Dave Hampton historian and author of San Diego’s Craft Revolution: From Post-War Modern to California Design
James Hubbell’s early years in the San Diego art community
Dave Hampton is an independent curator and collector based in San Diego. His research is focused on mid-twentieth century craft, design and visual art in California and the Southwest, particularly within the San Diego art and architecture community. His essay “Art From the End of the Line” appeared in the 2007 Hubbell Press publication Seeds of Art and was followed by a series of articles about San Diego’s postwar art scene for the KPBS Culture Lust blog.

June 14 | Sarah Livia Brightwood President of Rancho La Puerta Fitness Resort
The mission of the Ranch and their long-standing relationship with James Hubbell
To preserve Kuchumaa’s beauty and sacredness, Rancho La Puerta President, Sarah Brightwood, dedicated many acres and established a unique US-Mexico wildlife corridor. Brightwood alongside James Hubbell and Milenko Manatovic facilitated the collective creation of Kuchumaa Passage at Rancho La Puerta in 1989 to honor the scared space, She will share stories of this unique experience and the fascinating process of building Kuchumaa Passage.
