Triton Restaurant Front Double Doors

James Hubbell designed and built two restaurants named The Triton in the 1970s for restaurateur Jay Martin. Hubbell designed a whimsical, immersive beachside dining experience that became a unique San Diegan treasure, loved by locals and tourists alike for 40 years. Filled with his hand-built art creating an underwater world, The Triton left a lasting impression. After the Cardiff location closed in 2014, the community, spearheaded by a Hubbell Art enthusiast named Steve Blumkin, saved nearly all the art from destruction. Much of the stained glass was divided into sections for an art auction in 2014 that seeded the construction of Ilan-Lael Art Center, the foundation’s art education headquarters.
