Finding Freedom Through Form: Biomorphic Design, Nature, and Creative Flow- Deeply inspired by the organic lines and joyous spirit of James Hubbell’s architecture of Jubilation, this one-day painting workshop led by Visiting Artist Fellow Vira Ustianska will invite participants to connect deeper with nature through observation, intuition, and creative freedom. The goal of this workshop is not simply to study biomorphic design, but to explore inner freedom through the observation of form. By analyzing natural rhythms, growth patterns, and organic structures, participants learn to move beyond rigid habits of seeing and drawing. Biomorphic sketching becomes a process of discovering how nature organizes complexity without force, allowing form to emerge rather than be imposed.
Through drawing and painting, participants develop a deeper connection with observation, intuition, and creative freedom.
Sketches are done outside onsite and the painting developed indoors with instructor support. Participants bringing their own materials can use medium most comfortable with: oil, acrylic, gouache, or watercolor, plus liners and papers for sketching. For participants purchasing materials-included ticket, Vira provides Rembrandt oil paints, which are a high-quality professional line, along with all other materials, including a toned canvas. Participants will chose a Hubbell location to paint one day prior.
Description
Participants will explore the surrounding landscape and architecture through observation and sketching. We will examine natural forms, growth patterns, and recurring rhythms found in plants, rocks, trees, and the architecture of James Hubbell. Special attention will be given to the visual dialogue between nature and built structures, revealing how similar rhythms connect both. Using the selected sketches as a foundation, participants will develop a finished work in oil, acrylic, or gouache. The focus will be on translating observed rhythms into a personal artistic language and creating a harmonious relationship between the man-made object and the natural environment. The final work becomes not a copy of nature, but an interpretation of its underlying principles of growth, balance, and flow.
