Description

Cyanotype Class with Christine Hoey

EXPLORE AND CREATE WITH ONE OF THE EARLY PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSES – CYANOTYPE

(For Any Skill Level)

Cyanotypes are one of the oldest almost forgotten photographic printing processes first introduced in 1842 by John Herschel. Friend and botanist Anna Atkins later used his technique and produced the world’s first photographic illustrated book on algae in 1843, considered by many to be a work of art and science. Treated paper exposed to ultraviolet light develops into a beautiful shade of cyan blue, resulting in a one-of-a-kind photo image.

This one-day class on cyanotype photography using California native plants offers a fun, easy, and rewarding hands on experience in making botanic contact prints using the cyanotype technique as well as an introduction to our local native plant ecology.

Christine will demonstrate how to make a cyanotype and will provide coated cyanotype photo paper along with fresh and pressed native plants and mixed media materials for you create your contemporary cyanotype prints. You’ll have the option of using natural dyes and watercolors to enhance your own unique artwork that will be frame worthy. Experimentation is encouraged, no mistakes are possible in cyanotype art!
