For the past 15 years, the Ilan-Lael Foundation has worked in collaboration with Colonia Esperanza and the Americas Foundation to construct of a primary and secondary school for the arts in Colonia Esperanza, Tijuana Mexico. James Hubbell serves as the volunteer building supervisor. Each month, he recruits two dozen volunteers who travel with him to the school to tackle construction projects, building classrooms, landscaping, and embellishing walls and floors with art.
Hubbell built the school with all the exquisite beauty his work is known for, sending a strong and loving message to the children of this poor Tijuana community about their own value and beauty. “It gives the community an identity. It gives them the ability to change other things,” says Hubbell. “If you go to a school that’s really very boring, basically the school’s telling you you’re boring. And if you go to a school where people have put a lot of effort into it, then you’re telling the kids they’re important.”
The school serves children in a neighborhood that otherwise would not have access to a curriculum that includes dance, computers, and art, in addition to math, language and science. Since its inception in 1992, over 2,000 students have passed their state exams, with many going on to university studies.
Hubbell also hosts the Annual Rosa Blanca Workshop to benefit the school. This design and build weekend happens in August, offering architecture and landscaping workshops on the school grounds.
