Ilan-Lael Programs

programs-3

Ilan-Lael is a dynamic place where art and nature integrate with community to inspire and transform our world. The tranquility of nature and the beauty of art are the essence of our home. Preserving these assets and employing them to the betterment of people is what guides us. We are advocates for change, and committed to being a dynamic player in the search for ways to promote creative, environmental, and humanitarian ideals.

  • Lectures & Talks

The Ilan-Lael Foundation has engaged the community in a conversation around the power of art and community-building to foster friendships and understanding. These conversations have created tangible results: a school for the arts in an under-served community, public park spaces in seven Asian cities, friendships among diverse people and nations, and art that transcend barriers. By continuing this dialogue, other opportunities arise to share best thinking on how to reach common goals and work toward solutions to our common problems.
  • Architecture Workshops

We partner with students and underserved communities to explore the power of the built environment to express our humanity and to change the way we live.
  • Artists in Residence

programs-2James Hubbell, our artist in residence, creates art and art opportunities for students, members, and volunteers at Ilan-Lael.
  • Student Internships

Students in architecture and art at the University of Cincinnati, University of California-San Diego, and other educational institutions come up the mountain to work alongside James Hubbell and a community of artists and architects during semester-long internships. See some of their work here.
  • Tiling School

programs-1Volunteers and students participate in projects at Ilan-Lael and in the community to learn the art of mosaic tiling.
  • Stained Glass Restoration Class

Volunteers and students work under a master stained glass artist to learn stained glass repair and restoration at Ilan-Lael.
  • James Hubbell Art Archive

Volunteers work with a curator to learn techniques of art cleaning and storage, data collection and database development for the James T. Hubbell Archive Collection at Ilan-Lael.
  • Organic Garden Classes

Volunteers work in the garden and landscape to learn how to plant, prune, compost, and maintain our organic and edible garden and fruit orchard.
  • Tours

Tour the grounds of Ilan-Lael, the art-filled and historically designated home of James and Anne Hubbell. Their mountain retreat home is open by appointment, and to the general public once each year on Father’s Day.
  • Retreats

We believe in the power of conversation to introduce people to new ways of thinking, confront ideas we find challenging, and move into unfamiliar places. Ilan-Lael can be reserved for groups seeking a peaceful and inspiring setting to move ideas forward.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary

We are situated on 40 acres of undeveloped mountain landscape adjacent to the Santa Ysabel Preserve and in the shadow of Volcan Mountain preserve. We maintain a one-mile nature trail that provides access to our wild and beautiful landscape.
  • Partner Events

We co-sponsor events with our community partners: Pacific Rim Parks, Americas Foundation (Tijuana, Mexico), Volcan Mountain Preserve, San Diego River Park, Lakeside River Park, Escondido Creek Conservancy, Elfin Forest, Sister City Society, San Diego Botanic Gardens, UCSD International Relations (Pacific Studies), Mingei International Museum, University of Cincinniti.
